WHY AM I GROWING A TAIL? - is a story about a boy named Baquarium during the point in his life where things changed dramatically. At the start of the story, Baquarium is a normal teenager. He has great friends, what he thinks are cool parents, a strong work ethic, and a carefree attitude.
Things are going well for Baquarium; junior year is about to begin, and he’s about to turn 16. If you ask him, the only things that he's worried about are if he'll get a car as a birthday present, if he’ll make the varsity wrestling team, and if he’ll move on or get back with his Ex.
Unfortunately, on the day of his birthday, Baquarium's life goes into a tailspin, literally, when he grows a tail. He’s scared and confused; he has no idea where the tail came from or why he grew it. Baquarium contemplates asking his parents, but he wants to be independent, and he's embarrassed. And recently, Baquarium hasn’t been getting along with his parents, especially since a cult came to town and they began to act sketchy.
Baquarium assumes that the tension between him and his parents is because of his newfound independence and because they don’t approve of the new girl that he’s interested in. But it’s not his fault that she’s in a cult, and he even thinks that it’s odd, too. They call themselves the Heads of the Hydra; they all dress the same and talk about perfection. You would think that peculiarness would be enough to keep him away, but he can’t resist a pretty face.
